Building an island

We decided to make an island for our kitchen. We are going to put it in the eat in area of the kitchen. So when we bought the house 3 months ago we found 2 bathroom vanities in the garage that is the same as our kitchen cabinets. Here are what they looked like. I already took the brass knobs off.



Lewis built a platform out of 2x4 so it would be taller.
Here he is attacking them to bottom of the cabinets.
Before putting the counter top on we needed something to raise the counter up just a bit so the front of the corner top didn't come over top the doors. So I bought a shelf from Lowes for $14. It was a long 12ft white shelf. Lewis cut it in half and then laid the side beside each other on top of the cabinets.
Then He put the counter top on and screwed it to the cabinet with L brackets. Then we got 3 sheets of bead board $30 and cut to size and put it around the back and sides.


We then bought molding to frame the beadboard. We used about 6 8ft long pieces. It cost $48. I am sure someone else might be able to use less trim but we got a 21inch piece and a 4ft piece out of the 8ft pieces and that was it.
The is the bottom front.
The beadboard and trim made the side stick out farther than the counter top which was a pre cut 4ft long piece. It was a prefect fit until we added everything to the sides. So this is the gap in the side that is filled with caulk but not yet cleaned up.
All done with total cost being $ 10 handles, beadboard $20, trim $48, board to raise counter top $15, Counter top $11, 2x4's we already had. $104
